Hitting the streets with Chris Stamp

Exploring ways to integrate street culture and sports in a casual and informal way at home led IKEA to reach out to avant-garde streetwear designer Chris Stamp. Their collaboration has resulted in the SPÄNST collection.

Chris Stamp founded his own fashion label, aptly named Stampd, back in 2011. Since then he has collaborated with some of the biggest names in streetwear. Now Chris can add a collaboration with IKEA to the list as well.

Based out of Los Angeles, Stampd is best known for its clean, monochrome, and minimalist streetwear pieces. For the collaboration with IKEA, the limited edition collection will be called SPÄNST, they’re exploring the changes and needs within the young homes of today, with a focus on active and urban lifestyle.

SPÄNST will be based on products supporting an active and sporty, urban lifestyle – with inspiration taken from architecture, concrete, nature, cracked earth and organic shapes.

“The idea behind the collection for IKEA is to reimagine how the younger, aesthetic, conscience consumer is organising their wardrobe and accessories at home,” says Chris about the collection. “I want them to be able to take pride in how they display their clothing and footwear, allowing them to appreciate their pieces just as much when they’re not being worn. IKEA gave me the opportunity to bring a new perspective to the global interior market.”

Together with Chris, we want to create a special place for showing and storing the favourite things and in that way show the uniqueness of the many people.

The collection, named SPÄNST, will be based on products supporting an active and sporty, urban lifestyle – with inspiration taken from architecture, concrete, nature, cracked earth and organic shapes. IKEA hopes to gain insights about how to use the understanding of a specific subculture in the design process and explore the design possibilities of working with new materials from another industry.

“Being a curious company IKEA always wants to explore areas where we haven’t been before,” said Marcus Engman, Design Manager at IKEA. “By collaborating with a fashion designer like Chris Stamp we can bring in the inspiration of streetwear into home furnishing. Together with Chris, we want to create a special place for showing and storing the favourite things, like the favourite sneakers or jacket in the home, and in that way show the uniqueness of the many people.”

The limited edition collection will be in store in May 2018. But for now, don’t miss Chris Stamp talking about his collaboration with IKEA at Democratic Design Days on the 7th of June, we’ll be live-streaming from the event right here.
