For the JASSA collection, the design and product development teams are exploring ways to create flat-pack furniture from rattan and bamboo. Something IKEA has been trying to do for a long time. Hear Marcus Engman, Head of Design at IKEA, speaking about this here.
Making flat-pack furniture from bamboo and rattan is difficult due to the properties of the raw material, the pieces are round and vary in thickness. As designer Nike Karlsson says, “with round sticks it’s always difficult with the (engineering) tolerance.”
In these images, you can see a prototype of a low-seater lounge being constructed at the supplier in Indonesia, design by Nike Karlsson. The aim is that low-seater will be able to be assembled by the customer at home.
